The deployment of the “Hell Hounds” is being hailed as a quantum leap for the US Navy into modern naval warfare from its cutting-edge unit operating in Unmanned Surface Vessel Squadron (USVRON) 3-this pivotal moment in the integration of unmanned surface vessels into the fleet will see robotic warships eventually deploy alongside manned vessels.
USVRON 3 is the second squadron dedicated to developing the tactics, techniques, and procedures necessary to support the weaponized use of USVs. Building on the knowledge gained from USVRON 1, the squadron is now focusing on incorporating smaller, more agile drone-type USVs, which are better suited for a wider range of missions.
First up for attention from the squadron is Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, or GARC-16-foot prototype, currently unarmed but with much potential. Vice Adm. Brendan McLane, commander of the Naval Surface Force, emphasized how even small USVs are mighty. He said, “These aren’t your child’s remote-control boats.” “Small USVs can be miniature weapons systems, packing a punch with sensors and future payloads.”
The versatility of the GARC lies in its ability to equip it with different combinations of sensors and armaments, making it a very powerful platform for the future. As the “Hell Hounds” continue refining both their tactics and technologies, this will ensure the US Navy’s revolution in maritime warfare, complemented by these modernized unmanned systems.
