The FN Five-seveN MRD is an optics-ready, precision 5.7x28mm pistol and truly a remarkable evolution in handgun technology. Building on a legacy of trust forged over more than two decades with the original FN Five-seveN, it brings a new definition of handgun accuracy to 2022, raising the bar to a whole new level by integrating cutting-edge optic readiness, ergonomics, and improved controls.
The FN Five-seveN MRD will have a patented optics-mounting system that allows for fast and easy setup, including plates that will match your optic to the slide. This will enable users to mount a miniature red dot sight in minutes. The system is compatible with most common optic footprints for multiple choices.
The new ergonomic frame of the FN Five-seveN MRD features all-new stippling and textures, with enhanced serrations on the slide, trigger guard, and safety selector. These improvements give a superior grip and better control on an already soft-recoiling pistol. It has an internal hammer for long-lasting performance, a smooth trigger pull, and a 4.8-inch cold hammer-forged barrel for ultimate precision at extended range.
According to Chris Cole, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FN America, LLC, the redesign was a very hugely critical move. The original design captured the performance of the FN-designed 5.7x28mm cartridge and became an overnight sensation in the sales market. The addition of an integral optics mounting system onto the slide changes the definition of handgun accuracy for the FN Five-seveN MRD.
The FN Five-seveN MRD is essentially a further development of its predecessor, chambered for 5.7×28 mm and delayed blowback-operated. The single-action-only hammer does ensure a clean and consistent trigger pull, breaking just in front of 6 pounds with very little take-up and a short reset, which is very much an internal affair. The 4.8″ cold hammer-forged barrel, paired with this high-velocity bottleneck cartridge, makes for a very flat-shooting pistol with almost nil felt recoil. Its users can remain on target accurately and precisely even at extended ranges, unmatched by any other semi-auto handguns.
John Ryan, Director of Product Management for FN America, LLC, discussed the focus being on the core benefits when doing their design update. He stated, “The Five-seveN pistol was already very accurate and very reliable, but there was so much untapped performance in the design and the cartridge that could be brought forward.”. Milling the slide in factory form allows for immediate mounting of most MRDs available on the market today. With better ergonomics and controls, the modern hand gunner gets better precision and versatility.
The FN Five-seveN MRD will come matte black or in FN-signature flat dark earth with two 20-round magazines and the necessary optics-mounting hardware. This new version of the FN Five-seveN keeps the legacy in accuracy and reliability but adopts features of modern handgun technology.
