CAMM-ER: Revolutionizing Air Defense with Extended Range Capabilities

It is termed the revolutionary factor in air defense, imbued with ultra-modern technologies and diverse applications. The CAMM-ER is developed by MBDA, a world leader in missile systems, and will form part of the next-generation CAMM family, which will provide robust protection against a wide range of aerial threats.

CAMM-ER features an active RF seeker to ensure superb all-weather performance without dependence on expensive fire control radars, further enhancing the affordability of the system to the majority of modern militaries. The missile has been designed from its inception as a stand-alone unit that is equally capable of being integrated into a wider battlespace network to engage targets well beyond the line of sight.

Originally developed for both land and sea applications, CAMM-ER forms the backbone of the air defense strategies of several nations. The missile is replacing the Rapier system deployed by the UK and Aspide munition fielded by Italy while enhancing the performance of such systems as the Italian Air Force’s Medium Advanced Air Defence System-MAADS and the Italian Army’s Grifo system.

Its length is 160mm with a diameter of 190mm, while its weight is 160kg. So, it is indeed impressive about specifications, having more than 40km in range, flying at supersonic speed due to the new motor designed by AVIO. Due to this extended range capability, now it can engage with multiple targets simultaneously, giving comprehensive coverage.

Due to its light and compact design, multiple CAMM-ER missiles can be carried by launch vehicles. The soft vertical launch technology not only reduces the weight but also offers flexibility in installation options. During its operational life, the missile remains maintenance-free, adding to its appeal to military forces.

Recent trials have successfully cleared CAMM-ER. In a key event, MBDA carried out a qualification firing with the GRIFO system where the missile was integrated with advanced radar and command systems, where this test validated the capability of the system to detect, classify, and neutralize targets.

Indeed, collaboration between MBDA and its international partners has led to major contracts, including the recently announced £4bn deal with Polish defense company PGZ for the supply of an advanced cruise missile and fighter jet defense air defense system, among a host of other aerial threats.

As MBDA continues to evolve, CAMM-ER could become one of the keystone components for modern air defense, bringing flexibility and reliability that no other system can offer armed forces around the globe.
